ANTIQUE GENERAL ELECTRIC 10 OSCILLATING 2 SPEED DESK FAN. General electric was one of the biggest producers of electric fans right from the beginning. In the early 30’s they introduced the “quiet fan” with large cloverleaf shaped overlapping blades to cut down on the noise the narrower blades made “chopping” through the air. Other manufacturers quickly followed suit with their own versions of ge’s “quiet fan” with large overlapping blades calling them “quiet blades” & other such names as not to outright copy ge’s quiet fan. To keep ahead of the competition, in the spring of 1938, ge introduced the “vortalex” fan as their “flagship” model, originally billed as the “super quiet fan”. With it’s modern, streamlined design & “super quiet” patented blades, it was the “cadillac” of electric fans & very expensive at the time (remember-air conditioning didn’t exist). A two speed toggle switch (high-off-low) replaced a lever type switch on earlier 10 fan models. I have restored MANY fans & i would call the vortalex one of the top quality electric fans ever made. Apparently others agreed, because they continued production of the model in larger sizes only 12″ & above after 1950-which is sad because the 10″ versions of these are the perfect. Size and the 12″ versions are HUGE for a 12″ fan with modifications right into the early 60’s. This fan has been completely disassembled. An exact duplicate of the fiber board bottom cover plate was cut with a plasma cutter from 16 gauge steel (i prefer steel to fiber board). The base stand, blade guard cage, & bottom cover plate have been blasted & POWDER COATED, not painted (a process baked on at 500 degrees that is 10 times harder & more durable than paint) in gloss black. The motor was disassembled, cleaned, & polished. For safe, everyday use the original two strand, lamp style cord was replaced with a brand new, one gauge heavier UL approved thermo-insulated round cord & a new UL approved “retro” style plug was installed. All electrical components were tested with an ohms meter & inspected to assure safety & proper operation. The oscillating gear box was opened, thoroughly cleaned of old grease & gunk, then the gears were inspected for any sign of wear & packed in new, fresh, high performance grease for another 70 years of regular use. The front bearing self oiler was cleaned out, the wool oil wick was replaced & it was refilled with light sewing machine oil (the best for electric fans). All rubber grommets were replaced with new ones. All remaining components were thoroughly cleaned, polished, & clear coated (each individual screw head is polished & the threads are cleaned). The two-tone gold & silver blades were stippled & clear coated. New rubber pads were installed on the new steel bottom cover plate to keep the fan in place when operating on smooth surfaces. The fan was then reassembled, properly lubricated & test run & oscillated on different speeds for a minimum of two hours to check for perfect operation. This fan is a preserved piece of the end of machine age american history that will most likely outlive the user. Because i just don’t understand the point.
