ANTIQUE ROBBINS & MYERS ELECTRIC 10 OSCILLATING DESK FAN. Robbins & myers opened in 1878 in springfield, oh (near dayton) producing castings for farm machinery & broadening into bicycle parts at the turn of the century. They began producing fans & electric motors in 1897, later acquiring hunter fans (for ceiling fans) & making a full line of fans & motors for everything from vacuum cleaners to refrigerators. They are still in business producing industrial electric pumps & are one of the most wanted brands among antique fan collectors today because of their “forever” quality. This particular fan, the model D10A6 was introduced in the early 30’s as their “flagship” model oscillator sporting modern, streamlined design with a fully enclosed oscillating mechanism, it’s design was the walter p. Chrysler building of fans. I have professionally restored MANY fans & this model is one of the most “industrial strength” fans i have ever seen with super heavy gauge steel wire blade guard & foundry castings, a 6 pole motor, and weighing in at a super hefty over 10 pounds. This is the heaviest fan i’ve ever restored for it’s size, it’s the quintessential heavy duty american engineered & built for 3 lifetimes fan. I restore mostly 10 fans (measured by blades) because they are big enough to do a great job moving air, but not obtrusively large to the point where they won’t fit on a desk, end, or accent table without looking huge. This fan has been completely disassembled. The motor housings, stand, bottom cover plate, wall hanging bracket, blades, & blade guard have been blasted & POWDER COATED, not painted (a process baked on at 500 degrees that is 10 times harder & more durable than paint) in gloss black (the blades & guard in mirror silver). The motor was completely disassembled, cleaned, & polished. For safe, everyday use the original cord was replaced with a UL approved thermo-insulated round cord & a new “retro” style UL approved plug was installed. All electrical components were tested with an ohms meter & inspected to assure safety & proper operation. The oscillating gear box was opened, thoroughly cleaned of old grease & gunk, then the all metal gears were inspected for any sign of wear (the main spur gear was replaced because of worn teeth) & packed in new, fresh, high performance grease for another 80 plus years of regular use. All rubber grommets were replaced with new ones. The emblem was carefully hand cleaned & double clear coated to preserve the lettering. All remaining components were thoroughly cleaned, polished, & clear coated as necessary (each original nut & screw was brush polished & the threads cleaned). The fan was then reassembled, properly lubricated & test run & oscillated for a minimum of two hours to check for perfect operation. This fan is a preserved piece of end of machine age american history that will most likely outlive the user. Knock a painted fan over & see what happens. Because i just don’t understand the point.
