Antique Vintage Westinghouse Whirlwind Electric Fan Circa 1917 Running Condition
Antique Vintage Westinghouse Whirlwind Electric Fan Circa 1917 Running Condition. This item is an antique vintage Whirlwind electric desk fan manufactured by Westinghouse from 1917 to 1919. It is in good condition and has been cleaned, upgraded, and still runs well. It has all steel construction with one speed, no on/off switchplug it in for turning it on. The current owner has owned it since 1984 when the power cord, plug, and wool felt base pad were replaced using very similar materials. The Westinghouse Electric Company was started on January 8, 1886 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, U. The Westinghouse Electric Corporation was an American manufacturing company. It was founded on January 8, 1886, as Westinghouse Electric Company and later renamed Westinghouse Electric Corporation by its founder George Westinghouse (18461914). Early on it was a rival to Thomas Edison’s electric company. It unveiled its products for power generation, power transmission and lighting in Great Barington, MA. The company’s first commercial steam driven electric generator. Began operation at Hartford Electric Light Co. The company pioneered the power generation industry and by 1900 had 50,000 employees with factories in Lester, PA, Charlotte, NC and Hamilton, Ontario Canada. This fan has a 110 Volt AC 50-60 cycle motor with two external oil cups, one at each end of the central axle. They can be removed with a flat head screw driver to periodically fill the oil reservoir that lubricates the axle through a wick on a spring. Both cups have been filled. The fan has a wingnut screw for locking the tilting motor and blade cage to various angles. For a 100 year old fan, this item is in good condition though it has some scratches on the blades and shows some signs of surface rust on the base, beneath the original paint. It is well constructed and weighted for stability so that it doesn’t tip over easily. It is NOT an oscillating fan, the motor and blades do not move left and right while operating. The fan runs quietly though the motor does get warm. This is a common characteristic of this model, well known to its owners. The motor gets very warm though not hot enough to burn the skin. Cage Width: 9 inches. Base Width: 5 3/4 inches. Weight: 6.5 pounds. Serial Number: 1810856 (stamped to the back of the Westinghouse badge). This is a beautiful, functional, antique representative of early 20th century manufacturing that will likely continue working for many decades to come. It would be an attractive addition to any antique collection or a novel working appliance to have in a home or office. It is a rare and handsome device from another time and culture. CAUTION: As with all antique electric fans, this appliance has a very open blade cage. This means that it is easy for fingers of all sizes to get in the way of the blades when they are turning. For this reason caution is advised, especially when children or pets are present while the fan is running.
