ANTIQUE EMERSON ELECTRIC 10 OSCILLATING DESK FAN. Emerson electric opened in st. Louis, mo in 1890 with a patent for a reliable electric motor & the financial backing of civil war union veteran john wesley emerson. In 1892 it became the first company in north america to mass produce & sell residential electric fans. Their slogan, “built to last” was more than a slogan, it was the way they built electric fans. They are the most desired brand of fan among antique fan collectors today because of their simplistic & reliable design. This particular fan, the model 6250 started production in the early 30’s equipped with “quiet blades”, no doubt copying general electric’s 1932 introduction of thier “quiet fan” sporting large, cloverleaf shaped overlapping blades to cut down on the noise the earlier, more narrow blades made “chopping” through the air & move more air. I have professionally restored MANY fans & the early emersons have the best oscillating system ever made in an electric fan. They are well built, smooth, quiet fans that last & last. This fan has been completely disassembled. The blade guard, blades, gearbox, stand, front motor cover & bottom cover plate have been blasted & POWDER C. OATED, not painted (a process baked on at 500 degrees that is 10 times harder & more durable than paint) in gloss black (the blades in mirror silver). The motor was completely disassembled, cleaned, & polished. A new thermo insulated, UL approved, round cord fitted with a new UL approved “retro” style plug that duplicate the original in gauge & thickness have been added. All electrical components were tested with an ohms meter & inspected to assure safety & proper operation. The oscillating gear box was removed, opened, thoroughly cleaned of old grease & gunk, then the gears were inspected for any sign of wear & packed in new, fresh, high performance grease for another 80 plus years of use. All rubber grommets were replaced with new ones. All remaining components were thoroughly cleaned, polished, & clear coated as necessary (each original screw gets the head brush polished & threads cleaned). Rubber feet were installed to keep the fan in place when operating on smooth surfaces and absorb any vibration. The fan was then reassembled, properly lubricated & test run & oscillated for a minimum of two hours to check for perfect operation. This fan is a preserved piece of machine age american history that will most likely outlive the user.
