Offering an antique ceiling fan made by Westinghouse Electric & Mfg. Note the h missing from Pittsburgh. The brass manufacturers plate shows 3 patent dates, the newest of which is 1898. The housing and blade brackets are all cast iron, with no chips or cracks. The wooden blades are original, as shown by the serial numbers stamped into the top end of each blade. Three blades display serial numbers matching that on the brass manufacturers plate : 427244. Oddly, the fourth blade shows a different serial number. Though darkened and stained, they are in good condition, showing no chips or splits. The motor was removed from the housing and both housing and motor were cleaned, but by no means’restored’. Loose and chipping paint was removed, leaving most of the original black, with some spots where the iron is exposed. The housing and motor were lightly oiled to prevent re-rusting. On re-assembly, the motor improved from humming to actually turning the blades, although it comes up to speed quicker if its given a push. It could use a good oiling, and the old fabric wrapped wiring, though intact, has seen better days. As with any antique appliance, it should be checked over by a professional before installing in your home. The snap switch is present, but not the stamped metal housing. Further, the switch turns, but no longer snaps. The center stem is bent, likely from the fan having rested on it in storage. The brass painted black ceiling canopy looks to be original. The’A’ model of this fan is mostly brass / bronze. The same canopy was probably used and simply painted black. The canopy looks to have been used to stand the fan in a box or storage, resulting in dents, etc. ADDENDUM: I replaced the photo of the brass plate with a photo that makes the serial number more readable.
