Unique Antique 1874 Mechanical Clock-Work Contraption Fly Swatter Paddle Fan, NR. My invention relates to the construction of a ; and it consists in the combination of a geared lever, cam, and train of clock-work with the pinion and shaft of an oscillating fly-brush, by means of which a motion is given to the brush very similar to that given to it by a person when using it, as is hereinafter more fully shown. It was designed for use on dining-tables or over sleeping persons for driving away flies and insects as well as move the air. When in motion it begins to spin the two removable double wire paddles. They measure 17 ½ inches tall by 9 ½ inches wide and these delicate wire paddles are hinged so you can spread them out at different angles. Originally there was paper on these paddles, but all we have are the thin wire frames. When the clock-work motor starts these paddles start to spin. The cast iron base measures 5″ by 4″ by 13″ tall and there is a patented date which reads, “May 12, 1874. The only problem to this mechanism is the original netting is missing and there is one small break to one of the wire frames. Everything else is in perfect, original condition, with no restorations.
